PublicMCP: public services as a conversation
An open-source MCP server for Maine burn permits, fire danger, tides and marine forecasts.
The problem
Applying for a burn permit in Maine, or checking a marine forecast before a passage, means navigating several government sites built for forms, not questions.
What we did
PublicMCP is an open-source MCP server that lets an AI assistant check Maine's fire danger, apply for a burn permit, and pull NOAA coastal forecasts, alerts, tide predictions and weather routing.
It uses only free public data, and it doubles as our reference implementation for building MCP servers well.
The result
PublicMCP is public on GitHub. It's the same pattern we use when clients want their own systems available to AI assistants.
